CCCSRI wayfinding

University of Newcastle Central Coast Clinical School and Central Coast Research Institute

The Central Coast Clinical School and Research Institute in Gosford, designed by DesignInc with wayfinding by Blue Sky, is an 8,000 m² facility that unites education, research and healthcare in a welcoming, people-centred environment. Emphasising collaboration, inclusivity and sustainability, the design incorporates natural materials, warm tones and abundant daylight to create spaces that feel open and connected rather than institutional. A culturally significant “Thurru” gathering space honours Indigenous heritage with symbolism drawn from Darkinjung Country, reinforcing values of community and respect.

Wayfinding was developed as part of this cultural narrative, with spaces named in traditional Darkinjung language through consultation with Elders, and Indigenous-inspired artworks and installations, such as glass decals and woven motifs, used as visual cues. A holistic wayfinding system was developed including identification signage, directional signage and information totems. The materials and forms of the signs referenced the local environment and the messaging and information carefully designed to enhance the user experience of the building.

The end result was a wayfinding solution that provided intuitive navigation while celebrating Country, embedding cultural identity into both movement and place.
