Qantas Next Generation Check-in

Blue Sky have been working with a diverse team of specialist companies to develop a new travel experience for Qantas customers.


The Next Generation Check-in experience features product elements developed for Qantas by Blue Sky in conjunction with Marc Newson, including a new Qantas Frequent Flyer Card, Q Card Reader and Bag Drop facility.
Qantas Chief Executive Officer, Mr Alan Joyce, said “The Next Generation Check-in would dramatically reduce check-in times and eliminate queues for customers, allowing them to move through the check-in area with speed and ease. This is a truly ground-breaking Qantas innovation”.

Blue Sky has combined advanced technologies and electronics into sophisticated housings to revolutionise the check-in process at Qantas domestic airports. The designs have required a close collaboration between Blue Sky Industrial Designers and Engineers with Architects, Human Factors and fabrication specialists.

A group of approximately 100,000 Qantas Frequent Flyers who regularly travel through Perth were invited to take part in the Next Generation Check-in trial. All customers travelling with bags are able to use the new Bag Drop at Next Generation Check-in airports. The Bag Drop injector has been created to ensure the Bag Drop process is simple and quick for all customers and will eliminate queuing for those travelling with bags.

Throughout the Perth trial of Next Generation Check-in, construction and training continued in Sydney, which opened in 2010, followed by Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra in 2011. The program was completed in the second half of 2011.

The check-in process provides a seamless experience for both customers and staff. Blue Sky has also designed the furniture at the gate to further streamline the process from check-in to boarding.

Blue Sky ties in disciplines including IT professionals, Human Factors specialists, prototype builders as well as stakeholders to develop the Next Generation Check-in.
